History Facts About Boston's Top Colleges!
Here at Boston Campus Gear, we take pride in the schools we represent in the Boston area. These schools include: MIT, Boston University, Harvard and Boston College. We wanted to share with you our favorite fun facts about these historic Boston schools.
MIT
- MIT stands for Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- It’s old! The school was founded April 10, 1861, which was two days before the start of the Civil War.
- If you go to MIT...you probably speak in your own language. MIT students have a way of talking within their own language--they primarily speak in code. Whether it’s talking about a building or a course they use numbers. For example, if you are a computer science major at MIT you refer to your major as “6-3.” Now if you visit MIT, you’ll understand at least one of their codes.
Boston University
- Boston University or BU has changed its name multiple times: from Newbury Biblical Institute to Methodist General Biblical Institute of Concord in 1847… to Boston’s Beacon Hill in 1867… to Boston Theological School… and then to Boston University two years later. We definitely like ‘Boston University’ the best, how about you?
- In 1917, BU chose the Boston terrier as their official school mascot. Fitting right?
- Boston University is so close to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. If you are a baseball fan, this school is definitely for you as BU offers discounted tickets for their students.
Harvard
- If you thought MIT was old...wait until you hear how old Harvard is. Founded in 1636, Harvard has been around as long as the Taj Mahal. How crazy is that?!
- Not only does the Ivy League have amazing academics, but also a competitive football team. Football is a big deal at Harvard! Harvard tried banning their football program twice, due to it’s dangerous characteristics. However, the pressure from alumni and students have helped keep Harvard’s football legacy intact.
- We all know Harvard is a very hard school to get into...but do you realize how hard it is? The selection rate is just 4.6%? Meaning that for every 100 applications that Harvard receives yearly, around 95 are tossed out. Being accepted to this school is a huge accomplishment in itself.
Boston College
- Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) to educate Boston's predominantly Irish, Catholic immigrant community. Of course now, they accept any religion but the school was founded as a Catholic school and they still have strong Catholic ties.
- If you love Instagram, go to Boston College, as it is the most popular school on Instagram. BC’s Gasson Hall is the third most instagrammed college building in the world.
- BC cares about their students. During exam week, they supply coffee, treats and...therapy dogs. How awesome is that?!
